In Adelaide, Australia, it’s been used to create female mice that couldn’t produce milk, meaning their offspring died shortly after birth. AgResearch scientists are working on whether the same idea could apply to rats, in theory stopping the population from growing. With new legislation set to loosen the rules around GE, the idea could get out of the lab faster. The Predator Free 2050 research project, called tactical genetic control of rats, is funded by Genomics Aotearoa – an alliance of ten New Zealand Crown research institutions and universities.
